Inklings of A. Mckenzie

“A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black, because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light.” ― Leonardo da Vinci 
Shamans say that trauma can cause our soul to fracture and parts of ourselves to get lost in the dark otherworld. It is the job of a shaman to bring back those pieces and help us be whole. The word “whole” and the word “health” have the same OE root HAL, meaning ‘undamaged.’ 

 There are many broken people in this world who feel like they have lost a part of themselves somehow, and don’t know how to get it back. I don’t have all the answers, but exploring the dark instead of running from it feels like a step in the right direction. My drawings are visual representations of that exploration.  Since I have begun drawing white-on-black (chiaroscuro) I have felt more whole.  In fact, I am in love.
